Many species are involved in providing us with essential items such as our food and medicine. Genetic biodiversity represents the variety of genes within individual organisms and groups of those organisms.
Generally, populations with the most genetic diversity stand the best chance of surviving environmental change. Larger populations tend to contain more genetic diversity.
Species biodiversity encompasses all the different species richness and all the individuals within each species abundance. Generally, ecosystems rich in species diversity are more stable than those with poor species diversity. In an ecosystem lacking biodiversity, the loss of just one species can cause a major disruption. Ecosystem biodiversity is the variety of ecosystems within a region. A region with more types of ecosystems is better able to support a variety of living things than one with fewer ecosystems.

Figure 1: Conceptual diagram showing how increasing diversity can stabilize ecosystem functioning. Each rectangle represents a plant community containing individuals of either blue or green species and the total number of individuals corresponds to the productivity of the ecosystem. Simple communities are represented by a box; in this case, these communities are so small that they can only contain 3 individuals. References and Recommended Reading Bai, Y. McCann, K. The diversity-stability debate.

Natural ecosystems provide the foundations for economic growth, human health and prosperity. Our fate as a species is deeply connected to the fate of our natural environment. As ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human activity, acknowledging the benefits of biodiversity is the first step in ensuring that we look after it. We know biodiversity matters. Now, as a society, we should protect it — and in doing so, protect our own long-term interests.
